Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different data
  • Read a picture graph where each picture stands for 10, with half pictures, and draw the pictures for a graph with a key of 2
  • Read a bar graph that counts by 2s, with bars that stop between the lines, and draw the bars on a graph that counts by 10s
  • Answer a one-step and a two-step how many more question from a bar graph
  • Measure to the nearest half inch and quarter inch with rulers at real size
  • Read a line plot marked in halves and make one marked in quarters
  • The last two questions are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade: tallying a survey into a frequency table, and listing the possible outcomes of a spinner
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Answer one- and two-step how many more and how many fewer questions
  • Measure to the nearest half and quarter inch
  • Read a line plot marked in halves or quarters
  • Make a line plot from a table of lengths
  • Tally a survey into a frequency table
  • List the possible outcomes of a spinner

How to Use This Pack

The unit test for the data and line plots unit of 3rd grade. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different data, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 11 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 10 and 11 (a survey in a frequency table, and the outcomes of a spinner) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Print at 100% (actual size) so the rulers measure true inches. Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 10 and 11 are taught in 3rd grade in some states only: a class that follows the Common Core can stop after question 9 and score out of 9. Question 5 has two parts, a one-step and a two-step question: give the point when both are right, or half a point each. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Measure a few crayons or pencils to the nearest quarter inch together and make a line plot of the lengths.

Tips for Success

  • Look at the key or the scale before reading any graph
  • A half picture stands for half of what a whole picture stands for
  • A bar that stops between two lines is halfway between their numbers
  • Line up the end of the thing with the 0 on the ruler
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.MD.B.3 Make picture and bar graphs where each symbol or square stands for several items, and answer one- and two-step comparison questions from them.
  • 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half or quarter inch and show the measurements on a line plot marked in wholes, halves or quarters.

3rd Grade Data and Line Plots Test

The unit test for scaled picture graphs, scaled bar graphs and line plots, in two forms. Students read and finish graphs with a key or a scale, answer how many more and how many fewer questions, measure to the half and quarter inch, and read and make line plots.
