One page to give on the first day of the unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the fractions unit before it: naming and shading fractions of shapes, naming and placing fractions on number lines, how many parts make a whole, and which of two strips has more shaded. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet name a shaded fraction needs fraction strips in hand for the first lessons, and one who misses the number lines needs to count the parts from 0 to 1 again before two number lines are lined up to find equal fractions. Nothing on the page asks for equivalent fractions yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: fold paper strips into halves, fourths and eighths, and ask your child to name a part and show it.

A check to give before the unit on equivalent and comparing fractions, on the fractions unit before it. Students write and shade fractions of shapes, name and place fractions on number lines, tell how many parts make a whole and pick the strip with more shaded.
