Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different fractions
  • Find shapes with one fourth shaded, and write unit fractions
  • Write a shaded fraction in numbers and in words, and shade a fraction
  • Circle the squares cut into parts with the same area, then cut a rectangle into equal parts
  • Label the first mark on a number line, cut 0 to 1 into equal parts, and name and place fractions
  • The last three questions (fractions of a set, mixed numbers and sums of unit fractions) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Unit fractions: one of the equal parts of a whole
  • Fractions in numbers and in words: numerator and denominator
  • Shade a fraction of a shape
  • Parts with the same area can look different
  • Unit fractions on a number line
  • Name and place fractions on a number line
  • Fractions of a set of counters
  • Fractions greater than 1 as mixed numbers
  • A fraction as a sum of unit fractions

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on fractions as numbers. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different fractions, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 13 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 10 are the Common Core part of the unit; questions 11 to 13 (fractions of a set, mixed numbers and sums of unit fractions) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1 to 10 cover the Common Core lessons. Questions 11 to 13, at the bottom of the second page, are taught in 3rd grade in some states only (fractions of a set, fractions greater than 1 and sums of unit fractions): give the ones your class learns and score out of what you give. On the questions where students draw (cutting a rectangle into equal parts, marking a number line), any way that is right gets the point. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child to say what the bottom number of a fraction tells (how many equal parts in the whole) and what the top number tells (how many of them).

Tips for Success

  • Ask "Are the parts equal?" before naming any fraction
  • Have students count the squares to check that parts have the same area
  • On number lines, count the spaces between marks, not the marks
  • Fold a paper strip into fourths to see 1/4 on a number line
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.NF.A.1 Know 1/b is one of b equal parts of a whole, and a/b is a of those parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
  • 3.NF.A.2a Mark 1/b on a number line by splitting the space from 0 to 1 into b equal parts; the first part ends at 1/b.
  • 3.NF.A.2b Place a/b on a number line by counting a jumps of size 1/b from 0; where the jumps end is a/b.
  • 3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into parts of equal area and describe each part with a unit fraction, such as 1/6 of the shape.
  • 4.NF.B.3b Break a fraction apart into same-denominator fractions in different ways, like 5/6 = 2/6 + 3/6 = 1/6 + 4/6, and write the equations.
  • 4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, for example by changing them to fractions or by using properties of operations.
  • 4.NF.B.4a See a fraction a/b as a copies of 1/b, such as 7/3 = 7 × (1/3), and show it with a fraction model.

3rd Grade Fractions Test

The unit test on fractions as numbers, in two forms. Students name and shade fractions of shapes, find parts with the same area, and name and place fractions on number lines.
