How to Use This Pack

Eleven exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 3rd grade unit on the multiplication and division facts, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel. The strategy tickets show each step, so a wrong answer shows where the strategy broke down.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 3.11 (facts with 11 and 12) is for the states that teach it in 3rd grade; skip it if your class does not. The tickets never ask a problem from the unit test, which is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a fact family together. When a fact is hard, ask which fact nearby your child already knows: the 2s for the 4s, the 5s for the 6s, the 10s for the 9s.

Tips for Success

  • Ask students to say the strategy aloud before they write
  • To divide, think of the multiplication fact
  • Group the factors that make 10 first
  • Keep a multiplication chart out for checking, not for answering
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
