Features

  • Two quick questions a ticket
  • An "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves
  • Fill in part of the addition table, and tell how sums change along a line of it
  • Fill in a times table row that is double another, and find the numbers in the 9s row
  • Tell whether a sum or product is odd or even without working it out, and pick the rule that is always true
  • Tickets 8.4 to 8.7 (number patterns by a rule, mistakes and positions, shape patterns and input-output tables) are for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys for every ticket

How to Use This Pack

Seven exit tickets, one for each lesson of a unit on patterns, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two short questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ask students to tell you why a pattern works when you collect the ticket: an 8s number is double the 4s number because 8 is double 4. Tickets 8.4 to 8.7 are for the states that teach those lessons in 3rd grade; skip the ones your class does not learn. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing patterns together. Ask your child to say the rule of a pattern in words, and how they knew a sum would be odd or even without adding.

Tips for Success

  • Keep an addition table and a multiplication table out for tickets 8.1 and 8.2
  • Ask why each pattern works, not only what comes next
  • Odd + odd is even because the two extra ones make a pair
  • Check a rule against every number shown, not just the first two
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number or shape pattern from a rule and notice features the rule does not say, such as terms switching between odd and even.
