Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Fill in part of the addition table and tell how a shaded line of it changes
  • Fill in a row of the times table that is double another, and find the 5s row
  • Tell whether a sum or product is odd or even without working it out, and pick the rule that is always true
  • The second page (number patterns by a rule, find the mistake, the number at a position, growing and shrinking shape patterns and input-output tables) is for the states that teach them in 3rd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Patterns in the addition table
  • Patterns in the times table
  • A row that is double another row
  • Multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5
  • Odd and even sums and products
  • Find the rule and fill in a number pattern
  • Find the mistake in a pattern
  • The number at a position
  • Growing and shrinking shape patterns
  • Input-output tables

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on patterns, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers. The first page (questions 1 to 6) is the Common Core unit; the second page (questions 7 to 12) is for the states that teach number patterns by a rule, shape patterns and input-output tables, as on the test. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, and ask students to say why each pattern works: 4 times a number is double 2 times it, and an even number of things always pairs up. A Common Core class can stop after the first page. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to tell you the rule of each pattern in words, and how they knew a sum would be odd or even without adding.

Tips for Success

  • Keep an addition table and a multiplication table out
  • Ask why each pattern works, not only what comes next
  • Odd + odd is even because the two extra ones make a pair
  • Check a rule against every number shown, not just the first two
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 3.OA.D.9 Spot patterns in addition tables, times tables and other arithmetic, and explain them with properties, like why multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number or shape pattern from a rule and notice features the rule does not say, such as terms switching between odd and even.

3rd Grade Patterns Unit Review

A review of the unit on patterns, to go over together the day before the test. Students fill in parts of the addition and multiplication tables and tell how their numbers change, predict odd and even sums and products, find a pattern's rule and its mistake, extend shape patterns and complete input-output tables.
