How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on patterns, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: skip counting, even numbers to 100, multiplication and addition facts, and counting on by 10s and back by 100s. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: the patterns in the addition and multiplication tables are made of these facts and counts, so a student who misses the facts or the skip counting needs them beside the unit, and one who cannot pick out even numbers needs pairs of counters before the odd and even lesson. Nothing on the page asks for a pattern's rule yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on patterns starts: skip count by 3s, 4s and 5s together, and ask whether the house numbers on your street are odd or even.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep a hundred chart out for a student who missed the counting
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count up to 1,000, and count by fives, tens and hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally find the number 10 or 100 greater or smaller than any number from 100 to 900.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.

3rd Grade Patterns Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on patterns, on what it builds on. Students skip count by 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s, circle even numbers, answer multiplication and addition facts, and count on by 10s and back by 100s.
