Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different numbers
  • Divide a unit fraction by a whole number on an area model and as equations
  • Divide a whole number by a unit fraction with jumps on a number line and as equations
  • Check a division by multiplying, and find a missing number
  • Two division stories, each with an equation and an answer
  • The last four questions (a fraction divided by a fraction, fractions as decimals, one number line, percents) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Fractions and decimals on one number line
  • Percents as parts of 100

How to Use This Pack

The unit test on dividing with unit fractions and on fractions, decimals and percents. Pages 1 and 2 are Form A. Pages 3 and 4 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 12 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Questions 1 to 8 are the Common Core part of the unit; questions 9 to 12 (a fraction divided by a fraction, fractions as decimals and back, one number line, percents) are for the states that teach them in 5th grade. The pre-check and the unit review are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give Form A the day after the unit review. Questions 1 to 6, on the first page, ask two questions on each of the first three lessons. Many questions have two or more parts (two divisions, a division and its check, an equation and an answer): give the point when every part is right, or score them by the part if you like. The two stories on the second page ask for an equation and an answer; the key gives one equation, and a multiplication with the unknown is right too. Questions 9 to 12 are taught in 5th grade in some states only: give the ones your class learns and score out of what you give. No question asks a problem from the unit's exit tickets or the practice sheets. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use Form B as a check after the unit. Ask your child how many 1/4 cup scoops are in 3 cups, and how to check the answer by multiplying.

Tips for Success

  • Ask "how many of these fit in that?" before dividing by a unit fraction
  • A unit fraction divided by a whole number gets smaller; a whole number divided by a unit fraction gets bigger
  • Check every quotient by multiplying it by the divisor
  • Read decimals aloud as fractions: 0.72 is seventy-two hundredths
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators or numerators, or a benchmark like 1/2; record with >, = or < and explain.
  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.A.3b Compare two decimals to the thousandths by the value of the digits in each place, and record the result with >, = or <.
  • 5.NF.B.7a Divide a unit fraction by a whole number, such as (1/2) ÷ 3 = 1/6, using models and stories, and check by multiplying.
  • 5.NF.B.7b Find how many unit fractions fit in a whole number, such as 3 ÷ (1/4) = 12, using models and stories, and check by multiplying.
  • 5.NF.B.7c Solve real-life problems that divide unit fractions by whole numbers or whole numbers by unit fractions, like how many 1/4-cup scoops fill 3 cups.

5th Grade Dividing Fractions Test

5th Grade

The unit test on dividing with unit fractions, and on fractions, decimals and percents as one number, in two forms. Students divide on area models and number lines, check by multiplying, write equations for division stories, divide fractions and write fractions as decimals and percents.
