How to Use This Pack

Six exit tickets, one for each lesson of the 5th grade money and financial literacy unit, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Every lesson in this unit comes from the state standards that teach financial literacy in 5th grade, so the unit can be taught at any time of the year. People, families and amounts are made up and the numbers are kept round, so the math stays the focus. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Look at a store receipt to find the sales tax, or keep a running balance of a week's allowance and spending.

Tips for Success

  • Sales tax at 5 cents for every $1 on a $40 item is 40 times 5 cents, or $2
  • Net pay is gross pay minus taxes and other deductions
  • A deposit adds to the balance and a payment subtracts from it
  • A budget is balanced when expenses are not more than income
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up
