Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the order of the test
  • Multiply a decimal by a whole number with tenths strips and a hundred grid, and shade tenths times tenths
  • Estimate to place the decimal point, and multiply decimals and money in columns
  • Share base-ten blocks to divide, and divide by a 2-digit number to a quotient in hundredths
  • Divide by tenths and hundredths, and solve decimal stories, money too
  • The last question (times and divided by 0.1 and 0.01) is for the states that teach it in 5th grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Decimal stories with all four operations

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on multiplying and dividing decimals, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions ask the test's kinds of question in the test's order, with other numbers. Questions 1 to 11 are the Common Core lessons, and question 12 (times and divided by 0.1 and 0.01) is for the states that teach it. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 12 is taught in 5th grade in some states only: leave it out if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson and show the work for the columns, the long division and the stories, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Ask your child to estimate each product or quotient first, then check the answer against the estimate.

Tips for Success

  • Estimate first, then use the estimate to place the decimal point
  • Count the decimal places in both factors to place the point in a product
  • Line up the point in the quotient with the point in the dividend
  • Read 1.5 ÷ 0.3 as "how many 0.3s are in 1.5?"
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by two-digit numbers to find whole-number quotients, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.
