How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on multiplying and dividing decimals, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 4th grade work the unit builds on: a whole number times a fraction in tenths and hundredths, estimating a product by rounding to tens, fractions as decimals, multiplying 2-digit numbers, long division by a 1-digit number, and tenths as hundredths. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet multiply 46 × 27 or divide by a 1-digit number needs that practice before decimals are added, and one who misses the fractions needs tenths strips and hundred grids for the first lessons. Nothing on the page multiplies or divides a decimal yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: multiply two 2-digit numbers together, and ask how many hundredths are in 0.4.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep tenths strips and hundred grids out for a student who missed the fraction questions
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.
  • 5.NBT.B.5 Multiply whole numbers with many digits fluently, using the standard written method.
  • 5.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by two-digit numbers to find whole-number quotients, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators by rewriting them as equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
  • 5.NF.B.4a Multiply a whole number or fraction by a fraction, seeing (3/4) × 2 as 3 of the 4 equal parts of 2, using models.
  • 5.NF.B.5b Explain why multiplying by a fraction above 1 makes a number bigger and below 1 makes it smaller; see equivalent fractions as multiplying by 1.

5th Grade Multiplying and Dividing Decimals Pre-Check

5th Grade

A check to give before the unit on multiplying and dividing decimals, on the fraction, decimal and whole number work it builds on. Students multiply a whole number by a fraction, estimate a product, write fractions as decimals, multiply 2-digit numbers, divide by a 1-digit number and write tenths as hundredths.
