How to Use This Pack

Nine exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 5th grade unit on multiplying and dividing decimals, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Hand out the tickets in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. The faces show how students feel about the lesson, the answers show what they can do; the two do not always agree. Ticket 6.5 is for the states that teach multiplying and dividing by 0.1 and 0.01 in 5th grade; skip it if your class does not. No ticket asks a problem from the practice sheets the lesson plans use, so the tickets show what students can do on new numbers.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Before your child multiplies or divides, ask for an estimate with whole numbers, then check that the answer is close to it.

Tips for Success

  • Keep a hundred grid on the board for the model tickets
  • Have students estimate before they place a decimal point
  • Count the decimal places in the factors before writing a product
  • Line up the decimal point in the quotient right above the dividend's
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 5.NBT.A.2 Explain why multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 or 1,000 adds zeros or moves the decimal point, and write powers of 10 with exponents.
  • 5.NBT.B.6 Divide numbers up to 9,999 by two-digit numbers to find whole-number quotients, with place-value strategies shown in equations, arrays or area models.
  • 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths using models, drawings and place value, and explain how each strategy matches a written method.
