One page to give on the first day of the unit on classifying shapes and angles, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 3rd and 4th grade work the unit builds on: right angles and parallel sides on dot paper, acute, right and obtuse angles, every parallelogram among quadrilaterals, measuring an angle with a protractor, an unknown angle on a straight line, and doubling and halving. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the right angles and parallel sides needs to mark them on shapes before naming triangles and quadrilaterals, and one who leaves the rectangle or the rhombus out of the parallelograms needs the lessons on groups inside groups most. Each student needs a protractor for question 4. A low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.
Use it to see what your child needs before the unit starts: look for right angles and parallel lines in a window or a book, and ask whether a square is a rectangle.

A check to give before the unit on classifying shapes and angles, on the shapes, angles and facts it builds on. Students count right angles and parallel sides, sort angles, pick out parallelograms, measure an angle, find an angle on a straight line, and double and halve numbers.
