How to Use This Pack

Six games for practicing addition facts to 20, each on its own page with its rules at the top. Page 1, Addition Race, is a board game for 2 to 4 players: roll a die, move, and say the sum on the space; a partner checks it with the answer key. Page 2, Race to the Top, needs only two dice and crayons: add the dice and color a box over the sum, and see which sum reaches the top first. Page 3, Spin and Add, has two paper clip spinners (4 to 9 and 5 to 10) and a board where each sum shows up as often as it can be spun; players color sums and try for four in a row. Page 4, Bump, adds three dice: players cover sums with counters and bump each other off. Page 5 is 20 fact cards for Bigger Sum Wins, a card game like War. Page 6 is 20 cards from 0 to 10 with ten frames, for Memory and Go Fish games where a pair makes 10.

In the Classroom

Teach one game at a time to the whole class, playing it on the board against the class, then use it at a math center for the rest of the week. Print the board games and spinner boards on card stock, or slide them into sheet protectors and use dry-erase markers in place of crayons. Keep the cards in a zip bag with the rules page. The answer key for the board game and the cards lets a partner check sums without a teacher.

At Home

Play Race to the Top or Bump with dice from a board game at home. Ask your child to say how they added: "8 and 5: I made 10 with 2 from the 5, then 3 more is 13." Play Bigger Sum Wins with the cards, or with a real deck (aces are 1, take out the face cards) by turning over two cards each and adding them.

Tips for Success

  • Say the whole fact out loud: "8 plus 5 is 13"
  • Look for a double or a ten you know first
  • Count on from the bigger number if you get stuck
  • Check your partner's sum with the answer key
  • Play a game more than once: you get faster each time
