Skills Covered

  • See a rectangle as rows of unit squares
  • Multiply rows by squares in each row
  • Multiply length by width
  • Split a rectangle to multiply (distributive property)
  • Find a missing side from the area
  • Solve area word problems

How to Use This Pack

Five pages that connect area to multiplication. Page 1 shows every square: students count the rows and the squares in a row, then write the multiplication. Page 2 draws only the first row and column, so counting every square is no longer the easy way. Page 3 gives side lengths in centimeters, meters, inches, and feet. Page 4 splits a rectangle in two, like 6 × 8 as 6 × 5 plus 6 × 3. Page 5 has six word problems, one of them working backward from the area to a missing side.

In the Classroom

Build one rectangle from square tiles together before page 1 and ask for a faster way than counting one by one. Page 4 is a good place to talk about breaking a hard fact into two easier ones.

At Home

Measure a rug, a tablet, or a book in inches together, then multiply to find its area. Ask how many square tiles would cover it.

Tips for Success

  • Rows go across; count how many squares are in one row
  • Length times width gives the area
  • Area is always in square units: square feet, square meters
  • Splitting a side into 5 and a bit makes the facts easier

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties to multiply and divide, such as finding 7 × 8 from 7 × 5 and 7 × 3.
  • 3.MD.C.7a Tile a rectangle with whole-number sides and show that the number of tiles matches multiplying its length by its width.
  • 3.MD.C.7b Multiply length by width to get the area of whole-number rectangles in story and math problems, and picture products as rectangles.
  • 3.MD.C.7c Use tiles or area models to show that splitting a rectangle's side into two parts splits its area into two products (the distributive property).
