Bonfire Night, on 5 November, is celebrated across the UK with bonfires, fireworks, sparklers and treats like toffee apples. It remembers the night in 1605 when a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament was stopped. These pages keep to the fireworks and the food, so they suit any class.
Five Bonfire Night pages. Page 1 is a night-sky scene of fireworks, toffee apples, sparklers and rockets: count each kind (1 to 5) and write how many. Page 2 counts up to 9 of each kind, then circles the kind there is the most of and the fewest of. Page 3 shows sparklers in ten frames: write how many there are and how many more make 10. Pages 4 and 5 are repeating patterns of fireworks: circle what comes next, then circle the picture missing from the middle of a pattern.
Read each instruction aloud and count the first kind together, touching each picture and crossing it off. For page 3, use real ten frames and counters first. Before the pattern pages, make a pattern with the children standing in a line (arms up, arms down) and ask who comes next.
Count the pictures together and let your child cross off each one. Make patterns with things at home, such as spoon, fork, spoon, fork, and ask what comes next. After Bonfire Night, talk about the fireworks you saw and count them on your fingers.
