About Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night, on 5 November, is celebrated across the UK with bonfires, fireworks, sparklers and treats like toffee apples and hot chocolate. These pages are set at a Bonfire Night food stall, so they suit the week of 5 November.

How to Use This Pack

Five pages at a Bonfire Night food stall. Page 1 shows the coins that pay for six things, laid out with the coin worth the most first: count on and write the price in pence. Page 2 adds the prices of two things, all under £1. Page 3 counts coins and notes for bigger buys and writes the price in pounds and pence, as in £2 and 65p, the way Year 2 and Year 3 record money before decimals in Year 4. Page 4 pays with a £1 coin: count on from the price to the next 10p, then in tens to £1, and write the change. Page 5 has six word problems with one answer line each. The first problem on pages 1 to 4 is a worked example.

In the Classroom

Set up a pretend Bonfire Night stall with price labels and play coins before page 1, and let children take turns as the stall holder giving change. Page 4 matches the way a shopkeeper counts change into your hand: from the price up to the coin you paid with.

At Home

If you buy food at a bonfire or fireworks display, let your child check the change. At home, price a few snacks in pence and play shop with real coins, counting on from the price to £1.

Tips for Success

  • Start with the coin or note worth the most, then count on
  • Write pence with p and pounds with £, never both on one number
  • To give change, count on to the next 10p, then in tens
  • Underline the amounts in a word problem before you start
