Bonfire Night, on 5 November, is celebrated across the UK with bonfires, fireworks, sparklers and treats like toffee apples. These pages follow one Bonfire Night evening, from making toffee apples to getting home after the fireworks.
Five pages of evening times, six clocks a page. Page 1 is o'clock: read the clock and write the hour. Page 2 is half past: read the clock and write the hour after "half past". Page 3 asks children to draw both hands for o'clock and half past times. Page 4 has quarter past and quarter to times: circle the right words from three, where the other two are the usual slips (past for to, and the hour the hour hand has only just passed). Page 5 reads about the evening, such as "The bonfire is lit at 20 past 6", and draws the hands to five minutes.
Pages 1 to 3 suit Year 1, pages 4 and 5 Year 2. Use a teaching clock to show where the hour hand sits at half past and quarter to before page 4. Page 5 makes a good timeline: once the hands are drawn, ask which event comes first and how long until the fireworks.
On Bonfire Night, look at a clock together when the fireworks start and say the time in words. Ask your child to set a toy or paper clock to the time you will leave or eat tea.
