Six pages of Christmas cookie trays, all with repeated addition and none with a times sign. Page 1 shows trays of sugar cookies, star cookies, frosted cookies and tree cookies: write how many rows and how many in each row, then add the rows, such as 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Page 2 adds each tray by its rows and then by its columns, and both give the same total. On page 3 the trays are not full yet: add the rows of the full tray, then write how many cookies are there and how many more fill it. Page 4 asks students to circle pairs of cookies, write how many pairs and how many are left over, and circle odd or even. Page 5 has empty trays to draw on, from words (3 rows of 3 cookies) and from sums (5 + 5 + 5). Page 6 has six cookie stories with trays, tins and plates: draw the cookies, write the addition and the total. Each page starts with a worked example.
Set out counters or paper cookies on a tray or a sheet of paper in 3 rows of 4. Have half the class add the rows and half add the columns, then compare the totals. Take a few cookies away and ask how many more fill the tray again. For odd and even, have students pair the cookies up two by two and look for one left over.
Bake or buy cookies together and set them out on a tray or plate in rows. Ask how many rows, how many in each row and how many in all, and add the rows aloud. Before anyone eats one, ask whether the cookies can be shared out in pairs with none left over.

Trays of Christmas cookies set out in rows and columns, added as repeated addition with no times sign. Students add the rows and the columns of a tray, find how many more cookies fill it, pair cookies up to tell odd from even, draw trays and solve cookie stories.
