Skills Covered

  • Equal groups: add the same number again
  • Add an array by rows and by columns
  • Draw an array from words or a sum
  • Count rows and columns of squares in a rectangle
  • Cut a rectangle into equal squares
  • Solve array stories

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on equal groups and arrays, all with repeated addition and none with a times sign. Page 1 shows plates of pictures: write how many groups and how many in each, then add the same number again, such as 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 for 3 groups of 4. Page 2 shows arrays of pictures: add the rows (3 rows of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4) and then the columns (4 columns of 3 is 3 + 3 + 3 + 3), and see that both make 12. Page 3 asks students to draw arrays, from words (3 rows of 5) and from sums (3 + 3 + 3). Page 4 is about rectangles: count the rows and columns of squares in three rectangles, then draw lines from mark to mark to cut three more into squares and count them. Page 5 is six array stories, such as a muffin pan with 3 rows of 4: draw it, write the number sentence and the total. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Build one array with counters or sticky notes on the board and have half the class add the rows and half add the columns. When both groups get the same total, ask why. Turn the array a quarter turn: the rows become columns, and the total stays the same.

At Home

Look for arrays at home: an egg carton, a muffin pan, a window with panes, a sheet of stickers. Ask how many rows, how many in each row, and how many in all, then add the rows aloud.

Tips for Success

  • Rows go across; columns go up and down
  • Equal groups have the same number in each group
  • Add one row for each row: 3 rows of 4 is 4 + 4 + 4
  • Adding the rows or the columns gives the same total
  • Squares in a rectangle make rows and columns too

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.4 Use adding to find the total in an array with at most 5 rows and 5 columns, and write it as repeated addition.
  • 2.G.A.2 Cut a rectangle into a grid of equal squares and count how many squares it holds.

Arrays and Repeated Addition

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack on equal groups and arrays up to 5 rows and 5 columns, written as repeated addition, with no times sign. Count equal groups and add the same number again (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12), add an array by its rows and then by its columns to see both give the same total, draw arrays from words (3 rows of 5) and from sums (4 + 4 + 4), count the rows and columns of squares in a rectangle and cut rectangles into squares yourself, and solve array stories. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
