How to Use This Pack

Six pages of equal groups with mugs of hot cocoa, from 2nd grade repeated addition to 3rd grade multiplication and division. Page 1 shows mugs with the same number of marshmallows on each: write how many mugs and how many on each, then add the same number again (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12). Page 2 puts mugs on a tray in rows and columns: add the rows, then the columns, and see that both give the same total. Neither page prints a × sign. Page 3 writes the same kind of picture as a multiplication sentence. On page 4 the marshmallows are shared equally: draw them on the empty mugs and write the division sentence (how many on each mug). On page 5 one pitcher fills a number of cups: circle the cups each pitcher fills and write how many pitchers. Page 6 has six story problems from the cocoa stand, some to multiply and some to divide.

In the Classroom

Use pages 1 and 2 with 2nd graders and pages 3 to 6 with 3rd graders, or all six as a bridge from adding equal groups to multiplying. Paper cups and cotton balls or counters make page 4 hands-on: share the counters out one at a time until none are left. There is nothing from any holiday on the pages, so they work in any school all winter.

At Home

Make cocoa together and count marshmallows into the mugs: 3 mugs with 4 each, how many marshmallows? Then share a handful of marshmallows equally between two mugs and see whether any are left over.

Tips for Success

  • Count the groups first, then how many are in each group
  • Adding the same number again is the same as multiplying
  • To share, give one to each mug, then another, until none are left
  • Each circle of cups is one pitcher: count the circles

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.4 Use adding to find the total in an array with at most 5 rows and 5 columns, and write it as repeated addition.
  • 2.G.A.2 Cut a rectangle into a grid of equal squares and count how many squares it holds.
  • 3.OA.A.1 Understand a product as the total in equal groups, such as 4 × 6 meaning 4 groups with 6 in each.
  • 3.OA.A.2 Understand a quotient as either the size of each equal share or the number of equal groups, such as 24 ÷ 6.
  • 3.OA.A.3 Solve story problems about equal groups, arrays and measurements by multiplying or dividing within 100, using drawings and equations.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
