How to Use This Pack

Six pages of multiplication and division within 10 × 10, set at a Thanksgiving dinner. Page 1 counts place settings at round tables as equal groups, page 2 writes arrays of pies, rolls, apples, cranberry bowls and corn as rows and as two facts, page 3 shares food equally in baskets and on plates, page 4 circles equal groups to find how many tables, plates or baskets, page 5 writes the four facts of each pie-slice fact triangle, and page 6 has six dinner word problems. The first problem on pages 1 to 5 is a worked example.

In the Classroom

Set a pretend table with paper plates before page 1 and ask how many plates three tables of four need. Pages 3 and 4 work well side by side: the same division can ask how many in each group or how many groups.

At Home

Let your child help set the table for a family meal and count the forks by groups. Share a plate of rolls or cookies equally and write the division sentence together.

Tips for Success

  • Groups of: the first number is how many groups, the second is how many in each
  • An array can be read by rows or by columns: both facts are true
  • Sharing asks how many in each group; grouping asks how many groups
  • Every multiplication fact has a division fact that undoes it

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 3.OA.A.1 Understand a product as the total in equal groups, such as 4 × 6 meaning 4 groups with 6 in each.
  • 3.OA.A.2 Understand a quotient as either the size of each equal share or the number of equal groups, such as 24 ÷ 6.
  • 3.OA.A.3 Solve story problems about equal groups, arrays and measurements by multiplying or dividing within 100, using drawings and equations.
  • 3.OA.B.6 Treat division as finding a missing factor: solve 35 ÷ 5 by asking what times 5 equals 35.
  • 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide to 100 fluently with strategies, and by year's end instantly recall every product of two single-digit numbers.
  • 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step story problems with +, −, × and ÷, using a letter for the missing amount, and check answers by estimating or rounding.
