How to Use This Pack

Ten lesson plans, one for each lesson of a unit on odd and even numbers, patterns and arrays, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the ten lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, makers, tools and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lessons 7.4, 7.5 and 7.10 (repeating patterns, growing patterns and sharing equally) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. Socks, snacks, egg cartons and muffin pans are good for pairing up and building arrays, and the mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Keep the hundreds charts colored in lesson 7.2: lesson 7.3 uses them again
  • Say "rows go across, columns go up and down" every time an array comes out
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.OA.C.4 Use adding to find the total in an array with at most 5 rows and 5 columns, and write it as repeated addition.
  • 2.G.A.2 Cut a rectangle into a grid of equal squares and count how many squares it holds.
  • 3.OA.A.2 Understand a quotient as either the size of each equal share or the number of equal groups, such as 24 ÷ 6.
