Features

  • Every lesson of the unit, in the same kinds of question as the test
  • Pair up a group to tell odd from even, add two rows to see that even numbers are doubles, count by 2s and circle the even numbers to 100
  • Write equal groups as repeated addition, add an array by its rows and by its columns, and draw arrays
  • Join marks to cut a rectangle into rows and columns of squares
  • Arrays are repeated addition only, with no times sign
  • The last three questions (repeating patterns, growing patterns and sharing equally) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

Skills Covered

  • Pair up a group: odd or even
  • Even numbers as doubles
  • Count by 2s
  • Odd or even to 100 by the ones digit
  • Equal groups as repeated addition
  • Add an array by rows and by columns
  • Draw arrays from words and from sums
  • Rows and columns of squares in a rectangle
  • Repeating and growing patterns
  • Share equally

How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on odd and even numbers, equal groups and arrays, to do together the day before the test. Its 12 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. The last three (repeating patterns, growing patterns and sharing equally) are for the states that teach them. Equal groups and arrays are written as repeated addition, never with a times sign. There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, with counters out for pairing up and building arrays. Work a question, then let students try the next one on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Pair up socks, shoes or snacks to see whether one is left over, and look for arrays at home: an egg carton, a muffin pan, a window with panes. Ask how many rows, how many in each row, and how many in all.

Tips for Success

  • Pair things up two by two: one left over means odd
  • Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8
  • Rows go across; columns go up and down
  • Adding the rows or the columns gives the same total
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.OA.C.4 Use adding to find the total in an array with at most 5 rows and 5 columns, and write it as repeated addition.
  • 2.G.A.2 Cut a rectangle into a grid of equal squares and count how many squares it holds.
  • 3.OA.A.2 Understand a quotient as either the size of each equal share or the number of equal groups, such as 24 ÷ 6.
