How to Use This Pack

Five pages on odd and even numbers. Page 1 shows groups of 9 to 20 pictures in rows of six: students circle them two at a time, write how many, and circle odd if one is left over, even if none is. Page 2 lays pictures out in two rows: add the rows (6 + 6 = 12 is a double, so 12 is even; 8 + 7 = 15 has one left over, so 15 is odd), then count by 2s on the even numbers and on the odd numbers. Page 3 moves to numbers up to 100: write the ones digit and circle odd or even, with numbers like 58 and 81 where the tens digit does not decide. Page 4 sorts fourteen numbers into an odd box and an even box, then asks for the even or odd number just before or after a number. Page 5 is six short stories, such as 13 socks to pair or 11 grapes for two friends: draw a dot for each, pair them up, and answer yes or no. Each page starts with a worked example.

In the Classroom

Start with a handful of cubes for each pair of students: snap them two by two and ask whether one is left without a partner. On page 3, ask why 58 is even when 5 is odd: only the ones decide, because every ten can be split into pairs.

At Home

Pair up socks, shoes or spoons and ask whether any is left over. Look at house numbers on a walk: odd numbers are often on one side of the street and even numbers on the other.

Tips for Success

  • Pair them up: if one is left over, the number is odd
  • An even number is a double: 7 + 7 = 14
  • Even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8
  • Odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9
  • Only the ones digit tells odd or even: 58 is even

Odd and Even Numbers to 100

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack on odd and even numbers. Pair up groups of pictures to see whether one is left over, add two rows of pictures to find that even numbers are doubles (7 + 7 = 14) and odd numbers are not (8 + 7 = 15), and count by 2s on even and odd numbers. Then tell odd from even to 100 by the ones digit, sort numbers into odd and even, find the next even or odd number, and answer short stories: can 13 socks all be put in pairs? Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
