How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the unit on odd and even numbers, equal groups and arrays, before any teaching. Its six questions are on what the unit builds on: counting a group, doubles facts, counting by 2s, adding the same number again, what comes next in a pattern, and sharing between two. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who misses the doubles or counting by 2s needs that practice beside the first lessons on odd and even, and one who cannot add the same number again needs counters in hand for equal groups and arrays. Nothing on the page asks for odd, even or arrays yet, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the unit on odd and even numbers and arrays starts: count socks or shoes by 2s, and say the doubles facts aloud together.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • Keep counters out for a student who missed the adding or sharing
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Decide if up to 20 objects are odd or even (match them in twos or skip count by 2s); write evens as doubles.
  • 2.OA.C.4 Use adding to find the total in an array with at most 5 rows and 5 columns, and write it as repeated addition.

2nd Grade Odd, Even and Arrays Pre-Check

A check to give before the unit on odd and even numbers, equal groups and arrays, on what the unit builds on. Students count a group, add doubles, count by 2s, add the same number again, find what comes next in a pattern and share between two plates.
