How to Use This Pack

Thirteen lesson plans, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on measurement, in teaching order, after an overview page that lays the unit out day by day: a pre-check, the thirteen lessons, a review and the unit test. Each plan fits on one page. It gives the goal, what to get ready, the words to use, the lesson in five steps with the words to say, questions to ask, common mistakes and what to do about them, and the Animal Math worksheets, tools, maker and quiz for the lesson.

In the Classroom

Print the unit, or just the day's page, and teach from it. Each lesson takes about 45 minutes: a 5 minute warm up, 10 minutes of teaching, 10 minutes together, 15 minutes of practice and an exit ticket at the end. The exit tickets and the unit test are separate packs, made for these lessons. Lesson 8.1 (a bigger unit needs fewer) and lessons 8.11 to 8.13 (pounds and the right tool, cups and pints, and containers that hold the same amount) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade.

At Home

Teaching at home? Use the warm up and the "Try it together" step as a short lesson, with a ruler, a measuring cup and things from around the house, and the "Words to use" as the way to talk about it. The mistakes to watch for are the ones most children make.

Tips for Success

  • Read the "Watch for" box before the lesson: it is what to listen for while students work
  • Ask for the end of the thing lined up with the 0 every time a ruler comes out
  • Print rulers and worksheets at actual size so they measure true inches and centimeters
  • Sort the exit tickets into got it, almost and not yet to plan the next day
  • Use the help and challenge ideas for small groups during practice

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.MD.A.2 Measure an object by lining up equal-size units (like cubes) along it without spaces or overlapping, and give the whole-number count.
  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool, such as a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or tape measure, and use it to measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one object with two different units, such as inches and centimeters, and explain why a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • 2.MD.A.3 Make sensible guesses of lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
  • 2.MD.A.4 Measure two objects and find the difference in their lengths in a standard unit.
  • 2.MD.B.5 Solve story problems about lengths in the same unit, adding or subtracting within 100, with drawings like rulers and equations.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure several objects, or one object several times, in whole units and display the results on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
