Features

  • Forms A and B ask the same questions with different things and numbers
  • Measure to the nearest inch on a real-size ruler, pick a ruler, yardstick or tape measure, and pick a centimeter ruler or a meter stick and the unit
  • Choose the length that makes sense in the other unit, and circle the better estimate in inches or feet and in centimeters or meters
  • Measure two things in centimeters to find how much longer one is, and solve a length story
  • Show a sum with jumps on a number line and make a line plot of lengths
  • The last four questions are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade: a bigger unit needs fewer (cubes and paper clips), the tool and unit for weighing in pounds, cups and pints, and containers of different shapes that hold the same amount
  • Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question

  • Pick the tool and unit for pounds
  • Cups and pints, and the same amount in other shapes

How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for the measurement unit of 2nd grade. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, on the 1st grade measuring and the adding and subtracting it builds on. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different things and numbers, for a retake, a make-up or a second seating. Each form has 13 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page.

In the Classroom

Print at 100% (actual size) so the rulers measure true inches and centimeters. Give the pre-check on the first day of the unit and sort the class by what they missed. Do the review the day before the test, going over each question together. Questions 10 to 13 (cubes and paper clips, pounds, cups and pints, and containers that hold the same amount) are taught in 2nd grade in some states: leave out the ones your class does not learn and score out of what is left. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Measure a spoon, a book and a shoe with a ruler in inches and in centimeters, and ask which number is bigger and why.

Tips for Success

  • Print at actual size so the rulers measure true inches and centimeters
  • Line up the end of the thing with the 0 on the ruler
  • About means the closest whole number
  • A centimeter is shorter than an inch, so it takes more of them
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.MD.A.2 Measure an object by lining up equal-size units (like cubes) along it without spaces or overlapping, and give the whole-number count.
  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool, such as a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or tape measure, and use it to measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one object with two different units, such as inches and centimeters, and explain why a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • 2.MD.A.3 Make sensible guesses of lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
  • 2.MD.A.4 Measure two objects and find the difference in their lengths in a standard unit.
  • 2.MD.B.5 Solve story problems about lengths in the same unit, adding or subtracting within 100, with drawings like rulers and equations.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure several objects, or one object several times, in whole units and display the results on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
