Features

  • Two quick questions a ticket
  • An "I can" line and three faces for students to rate themselves
  • Measure to the nearest inch and in centimeters on real-size rulers, and read a ruler that does not start at 0
  • Feet and yards, and the right tool: ruler, yardstick or meter stick
  • One thing in inches and in centimeters, estimates, and how much longer
  • Length stories, sums and differences on a number line, and a line plot of lengths
  • Tickets 8.1, 8.11, 8.12 and 8.13 (a bigger unit needs fewer, pounds and the right tool, cups and pints, and containers that hold the same amount) are for the states that teach them in 2nd grade
  • Answer keys for every ticket

How to Use This Pack

Thirteen exit tickets, one for each lesson of a 2nd grade unit on measurement, in lesson order. Each page holds one lesson's ticket four times: copy the page, cut on the dashed lines, and seven copies give a class of 28 a ticket each. A ticket takes a few minutes at the end of the lesson. Students answer two quick questions, then circle a face beside the lesson's "I can" line to show how sure they feel.

In the Classroom

Copy the tickets at 100% (actual size) so the rulers measure true inches and centimeters. Hand them out in the last five minutes of the lesson and collect them at the door. Sort them into three piles (got it, almost, not yet) to plan tomorrow's small groups. Ticket 8.1 (a bigger unit needs fewer) is for Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas, ticket 8.11 (pounds and the right tool) for Virginia, ticket 8.12 (cups and pints) for Indiana and Virginia, and ticket 8.13 (containers that hold the same amount) for Oklahoma. The unit test is a separate pack.

At Home

Use a ticket as a quick check after practicing a skill together. Measure a spoon, a book and a shoe with a ruler, in inches and in centimeters, and talk about which number is bigger and why.

Tips for Success

  • Copy at actual size so the rulers measure true inches and centimeters
  • Line up the end of the thing with the 0 on the ruler, or count the inches between the ends
  • About means the closest whole number
  • A centimeter is shorter than an inch, so it takes more of them
  • Keep the tickets for each lesson to see who has caught up

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.MD.A.2 Measure an object by lining up equal-size units (like cubes) along it without spaces or overlapping, and give the whole-number count.
  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool, such as a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or tape measure, and use it to measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one object with two different units, such as inches and centimeters, and explain why a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • 2.MD.A.3 Make sensible guesses of lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
  • 2.MD.A.4 Measure two objects and find the difference in their lengths in a standard unit.
  • 2.MD.B.5 Solve story problems about lengths in the same unit, adding or subtracting within 100, with drawings like rulers and equations.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Show whole numbers as distances from 0 on an evenly marked number line, and show sums and differences up to 100 as jumps on it.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure several objects, or one object several times, in whole units and display the results on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.A.2 Estimate and measure mass in grams and kilograms and liquid volume in liters, and solve one-step story problems about them with any operation.
