Five pages of story problems about lengths, every story within 100 and in one unit: inches, feet, centimeters or meters. On page 1 each story has a bar model with its numbers and a ? for the unknown: two ribbons end to end, a ribbon cut shorter, a snake that grew and a missing crayon length. Page 2 compares two lengths with a two-bar model: how much longer, how much shorter, and a length that is longer or shorter by an amount. On page 3 students show their thinking on an open number line, and the answer key draws one way to do it. Page 4 keeps the numbers within 20 so each story can be shown as jumps on a number line from 0 to 20. Page 5 has two-step stories with a number sentence for each step. The first story on each page is worked as an example, and every answer is written with its unit.
Act out page 1 with real ribbon or string: cut a piece, measure it, cut some off, and measure what is left. For page 2, lay two strips of paper side by side from the same starting line and ask how much longer one is. Remind students that a length story always ends with a unit: 47 alone does not say how long, 47 inches does.
Measure two things at home with the same unit, such as two shoes or two spoons, and make up a story: how much longer is one than the other? How long are they laid end to end? Write the answer with its unit.
