Skills Covered

  • Read a measuring jug marked in cups
  • Measure by counting the cups that fill a container
  • Show an amount by coloring a jug up to a line
  • Know that 2 cups make 1 pint
  • Estimate how many cups or pints a container holds
  • Add and subtract cups or pints in word problems

How to Use This Pack

Five pages about measuring liquid in cups and pints. On page 1 students read six measuring jugs marked in cups, some numbered every cup and some every 2 cups, then count the cups that fill a watering can and a jar. Page 2 has empty jugs to color up to an amount: the first row in cups, the second on jugs marked in cups on one side and pints on the other, where students also write the amount in the other unit. Page 3 starts with a key, 2 cups = 1 pint: students circle pairs of cups to find the pints, count the cups in pint cartons and fill in a pints and cups table. Page 4 asks for the best estimate for six everyday containers, from a mug to a bathtub, then compares cups and pints with >, < and =. Page 5 has six word problems that add or subtract amounts in the same unit.

In the Classroom

Bring a 1 cup measuring cup, a pint container and a pitcher of water. Pour 2 cups into the pint container together and see that it fills up, then fill a jar or a bowl one cup at a time and count. Read a measuring jug on page 1 together first: find the numbers, then the line between them. Page 4 makes a good class discussion: does a mug hold 1 cup or 100 cups?

At Home

Look for cups and pints in the kitchen: a measuring cup, a carton of cream or ice cream, a pint of milk. Pour water from a measuring cup into a bowl or a water bottle and count how many cups it holds. Ask how many cups are in 2 pints, then pour and check.

Tips for Success

  • Read the jug where the top of the water is flat
  • When the numbers count by 2s, the line between two numbers is the cup in between
  • Two cups make one pint, so circle the cups in pairs
  • To compare cups and pints, change the pints into cups first
  • Write cups or pints with every answer

Cups and Pints

2nd Grade

A 5-page liquid volume pack for 2nd grade. Read measuring jugs marked in cups and count the cups that fill a container, then color the water up to an amount on jugs marked in cups and in pints. Learn that 2 cups make 1 pint by circling pairs of cups, counting the cups in pint cartons and filling in a table. Circle the best estimate for everyday containers, compare cups and pints with greater than, less than and equal, and solve add and subtract word problems in cups or pints. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
