How to Use This Pack

One page to give on the first day of the measurement unit, before any teaching. Its six questions are on the 1st grade measuring and the adding and subtracting the unit builds on: ordering three things by length, measuring with cubes, a number line, adding and subtracting within 100, which container holds more, and measuring to a whole inch with a ruler. Print at 100% (actual size) so the ruler measures true inches. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Print at 100% (actual size). Give the pre-check on the first day and sort the class by what they missed: a student who cannot yet measure with cubes needs cubes in hand before the rulers, and one who misses the adding and subtracting needs that practice beside the length stories. Only the last question asks for a ruler, so a low score is no surprise; it shows where to start.

At Home

Use it to see what your child needs before the measurement unit starts: line up spoons, pencils and shoes from shortest to longest, and measure them with paper clips or blocks laid end to end.

Tips for Success

  • Print at actual size so the ruler measures true inches
  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.MD.A.1 Put three objects in order from longest to shortest, and compare two lengths by checking each against a third object.
  • 1.MD.A.2 Measure an object by lining up equal-size units (like cubes) along it without spaces or overlapping, and give the whole-number count.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract to 100 fluently with place-value strategies, properties of addition, or the link between adding and subtracting.
  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool, such as a ruler, yardstick, meter stick or tape measure, and use it to measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one object with two different units, such as inches and centimeters, and explain why a smaller unit gives a bigger number.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure several objects, or one object several times, in whole units and display the results on a line plot.

2nd Grade Measurement Pre-Check

A check to give before the measurement unit, on the measuring and the adding and subtracting it builds on. Students order three things by length, measure with cubes, fill in a number line, add and subtract within 100, tell which holds more and measure with an inch ruler.
