Five pages about weighing things on a scale. On page 1 students read six dial scales in pounds, where the numbers count by 2s, 5s or 10s and the ticks in between are counted. Page 2 reads lighter things in ounces, on dials up to 16 and 32 ounces. On page 3 the scales have no pointer: students draw it to show the weight written underneath. Page 4 circles pounds or ounces for eight pictured things, then the heavier thing in four pairs. Page 5 has six word problems that add, subtract and multiply weights. The pages never change pounds into ounces, so students can focus on reading scales and choosing units.
Hold up something light, like a pencil, and something heavy, like a full backpack, and ask which one you would weigh in ounces and which in pounds. Then read one dial on page 1 together: find what each tick is worth, start at the number before the pointer and count on. Page 4 works well as a quick whole-class vote.
Weigh a few things on a kitchen or bathroom scale: a bag of fruit, a book, a pet in your arms. Read the numbers together and talk about whether pounds or ounces fit better. Food labels show weights in ounces and pounds too.
