Six pages of Christmas tree counting. On page 1 children count the round ornaments on each tree (the star on top is not an ornament) and write how many. On page 2 each tree has a dashed ornament to trace, one more, and children write how many there are now. Page 3 has ornaments in ten frames to count, up to 10. Page 4 shows two trees at a time: circle the tree with more ornaments. The trees are all the same size, so children have to count. On page 5 children draw the number of ornaments shown on a bare tree. Page 6 is ball, bell and star patterns hanging on a garland: circle what comes next. The first problem on every page is a worked example.
Read each direction aloud. Count one tree together on page 1, touching each ornament, and point out that the star on top is not an ornament. For page 2, act it out with counters: put out 4, add one more and count again. On page 4 ask children how they know which tree has more. Before page 6, say a pattern aloud together (ball, bell, ball, bell) and ask what comes next.
Count the ornaments together, touching each one. If you have a tree, count the ornaments on one branch, or count the ornaments as you hang them. Make patterns with things you have, such as spoon, cup, spoon, cup, and ask what comes next.
