Each page has eight number patterns with one, two, or three numbers missing. Students find the jump from one number to the next, fill in the missing numbers, and write the rule on the card beside the pattern. There are three levels: pages 1 to 4 are on grade level, with all four operations and some patterns missing their first number; pages 5 and 6 are support pages with small steps within 100; pages 7 and 8 are a challenge, with gaps that are not side by side and larger numbers. The first pattern on pages 1, 5, and 7 is a worked example.
Work the example on the first page together, saying each jump out loud. Then give each group the level that fits: pages 1 to 4 for most of the class, pages 5 and 6 for students who need support, and pages 7 and 8 as a challenge.
Start with page 1, or page 5 for an easier start. When a number is missing at the start of a pattern, show your child how to work backward with the opposite operation.
