Skills Covered

  • Know that = means "is equal to" and ≠ means "is not equal to"
  • Find the value of each side of a sentence
  • Write = or ≠ between two expressions
  • Tell whether a sentence with = or ≠ is true
  • Fix a false sentence by changing the sign
  • Compare two amounts in a story

How to Use This Pack

Five pages on the two signs, with sums and differences within 20. Page 1 starts with what each sign means, then shows two cube trains in each row: same length, write =; not the same, write ≠. Page 2 has twelve pairs to find the value of each side and write the sign. On page 3 students circle True or False for sentences that use both signs, then fix each false one by writing it again with the other sign. Page 4 sorts eight cards under = 12 and ≠ 12, then = 15 and ≠ 15. Page 5 is six short stories that compare two children's amounts.

In the Classroom

Build two cube trains, like 4 and 3 and 5 and 2, and stand them side by side: the same length, so 4 + 3 = 5 + 2. Swap one train for 6 and 3: not the same, so 4 + 3 ≠ 6 + 3. Show how ≠ is an equal sign with a line through it, and let pairs make trains for each other to judge.

At Home

Make two piles of small things, like 6 and 2 buttons and 5 and 4 buttons. Ask your child to count each side and say "equal" or "not equal", then write the sentence with = or ≠.

Tips for Success

  • = means is equal to: both sides have the same value
  • ≠ means is not equal to: the sides have different values
  • Find the value of each side before you choose the sign
  • A number can be on either side of the sign
  • To fix a false sentence, change = to ≠ or ≠ to =

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 1.OA.D.7 Know the equal sign means both sides have the same value, and decide whether addition and subtraction equations hold true.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract to 20 quickly using strategies done in the head, and by year's end instantly recall every sum of two single-digit numbers.

Equal and Not Equal

2nd Grade

A 5-page 2nd grade pack on the equal sign and the not equal sign (≠) within 20. Compare cube trains and write = or ≠, find the value of each side and write the sign in a circle, circle True or False for sentences with = and ≠ and fix the false ones by changing the sign, sort expressions under = 12 and ≠ 12, then compare amounts in six short stories. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
