How to Use This Pack

Five games on five frames, each on its own page with its rules at the top for the teacher to read aloud, all with numbers from 0 to 5. Roll and Cover needs a die and two kinds of counters: roll, find a five frame with that many dots on the board and cover it, and a 6 is rolled again. Race to Fill has a paper clip spinner with 0 to 3: color that many boxes and fill the frame exactly to win the round. Five Frame Trail is a board game for 2 to 4 players: say how many more dots would fill the frame you land on, and a partner checks the answer sheet. Make 5 Memory is 20 cards, each a number and its five frame: two cards make 5 when their dots fill a whole frame. In Shake and Spill children spill 5 two-sided counters, draw the spill in a five frame, write the two parts and collect all 6 ways to make 5.

In the Classroom

Teach one game a week to the whole class, playing it against the class on the board, then put it in a math center. Print the boards on card stock or slip them into sheet protectors and play with counters or dry-erase markers. Ask children to say what they see: "3 dots and 2 empty boxes: 3 and 2 make 5." Keep the Make 5 cards in a zip bag with their rules page.

At Home

Play Roll and Cover with a die from a board game and buttons or coins for counters. Play Make 5 Memory after dinner, or Go Fish with the same cards: ask for the card that makes 5 with one in your hand. For Shake and Spill, coins work too: count the heads and the tails.

Tips for Success

  • Look at the dots before you count them: can you see how many?
  • Five frames fill from the left
  • The empty boxes show how many more make 5
  • Two cards make 5 when their dots fill a whole frame
  • Say the whole fact out loud: "4 and 1 make 5"

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • K.OA.A.3 Break a number up to 10 into two parts several ways, recording each as a picture or equation (7 = 3 + 4).
  • K.OA.A.5 Add and subtract quickly and accurately with numbers up to 5.
