Eighteen flash cards, eight to a sheet, one for every fraction with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths or eighths, from 1/2 to 7/8. Each front shows a picture: a circle, a bar or a set of counters, taking turns, with some parts shaded or filled. Each back shows the fraction and its name, such as 3/4 and "three fourths". Print the pack double-sided and flip on the long edge: each back sheet is laid out mirrored, so every card's back lands behind its front. On a printer that prints one side, choose Fronts only under Print, put the printed sheets back in the paper tray, then choose Backs only. Fronts have a thick frame and backs a thin one, so a card turned the wrong way stands out.
Show a card and ask how many equal parts there are and how many are shaded: the bottom number and the top number. Partners take turns naming the fraction and turning the card over to check. Sort the cards by their bottom number, or put the fourths in order from smallest to largest.
Ask your child to name each picture as a fraction and say it in words. Then turn the pile over and ask them to point to how much of the picture the fraction means.
