Skills Covered

  • Write fractions with denominators that are factors of 100 as hundredths and as decimals
  • Write eighths as decimals (1/8 = 0.125) and thirds as decimals that go on (1/3 = 0.333..., about 0.33)
  • Write decimals as fractions and mixed numbers in simplest form
  • Decide whether a fraction and a decimal are equal, with and without models
  • Name points on number lines as decimals and as fractions
  • Show percents as parts of 100 and write them as fractions and decimals

How to Use This Pack

Five pages that join fractions, decimals and percents. Page 1 uses hundred grids cut into equal parts: 2/5 of a grid cut into fifths is 40 small squares, so 2/5 = 40/100 = 0.4. Then it makes hundredths without a grid, including mixed numbers such as 2 3/20 = 2 15/100 = 2.15 and the fraction 6/5. Page 2 counts eighths by 0.125 on a strip over a number line, writes 1 5/8 and 15/8 as decimals, and shows on a grid that a third is 33 hundredths and a bit more, so 1/3 = 0.333..., about 0.33, and 2/3 is about 0.67. Page 3 goes the other way: decimals as hundredths and then in simplest form (0.65 = 65/100 = 13/20), eighths read from a number line (0.375 = 3/8), then decimals such as 1.75 and 2.333... as mixed numbers. Page 4 matches fractions to equal decimals with and without pictures (one decimal is left over), decides whether pairs such as 1/3 and 0.3 are equal, and names points on two number lines as a decimal and a fraction. Page 5 reads and shades percents on hundred grids, finds the percent of bars cut into 4, 5 and 20 parts, and fills a table of percents, fractions in simplest form and decimals.

In the Classroom

Hand out hundred grids and ask students to shade 3/4 of one. Some will count 75 squares; others will shade three quarters of the grid. Put both on the board: they are the same amount, 75/100 = 0.75. Before page 2, cut a paper strip into eighths and ask what half of 0.25 is. On page 4, ask students who circle "equal" for 1/3 and 0.3 to shade both on a grid.

At Home

Look for percents on signs and labels: 50% off, 25% more. Ask your child what fraction of 100 each one is, and what it is in simplest form: 25% is 25/100, or 1/4.

Tips for Success

  • To write a fraction as hundredths, multiply the top and the bottom by the same number: 3/4 = 75/100
  • Each eighth is 0.125, so 3/8 = 0.375
  • Thirds never end: 1/3 = 0.333..., about 0.33, and 2/3 = 0.666..., about 0.67
  • To simplify, divide the top and the bottom by the same number until only 1 divides both
  • Percent means out of 100: 45% = 45/100 = 0.45

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • 4.NF.C.5 Rewrite tenths as hundredths, such as 7/10 = 70/100, to add a fraction in tenths to one in hundredths.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, such as 45/100 = 0.45, and find decimals like these on a number line.

Fractions, Decimals and Percents

5th Grade

A 5-page fractions and decimals pack for 5th grade. Write fractions in fourths, fifths, twentieths, twenty-fifths and fiftieths as hundredths and then as decimals, on hundred grids cut into equal parts and without them. Count eighths by 0.125 on a number line, and see on a hundred grid why 1/3 = 0.333..., about 0.33. Write decimals as fractions and mixed numbers in simplest form, match and compare fractions and decimals with and without pictures, name points on number lines both ways, and show percents as parts of 100 on grids and bars. Every page comes in color and in black and white. Answer keys included.
