One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on addition within 10, to see what children already know. Read each of its five questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the moon. 3 turtles are on a log." Children count two groups to find how many in all, solve a story where more turtles come, solve a story about elephants and giraffes at the zoo, write how many are in each of two groups and in all in a number sentence, and write how many dots a ten frame holds in all. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who counts only one group needs to push two groups of counters together in the first lessons, and one who loses the story needs it acted out with toys. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on addition starts. Read each question aloud and let your child count on fingers or with small toys.
