One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on subtraction within 10, to see what children already know. Read each of its five questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the moon. 5 bears play in the park." Children find how many pears are left when some are crossed out, cross out bears to act out a story, write the number sentence for a picture, cross out dots in a ten frame, and circle plus or minus for a story and write the answer. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.
Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who counts the crossed out pictures too needs to take toys away by hand in the first lessons, and one who loses the story needs it acted out. The minus sign is new to many children, so a miss there is no surprise; the score shows where to begin.
Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on subtraction starts. Read each question aloud and let your child act out the story with small toys or fingers.
