How to Use This Pack

Seven pages for one Kindergarten unit on subtraction within 10. Page 1 is a pre-check to give before the unit, to see what children already know. Pages 2 and 3 are a review to do together before the test, with a tip on every question. Pages 4 and 5 are the unit test, Form A. Pages 6 and 7 are Form B: the same questions in the same order with different pictures and numbers, for a retake or a child who was away. Each form has 10 questions, one point each, and a Score line on its first page. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the moon. 8 elephants drink at the lake."

In the Classroom

Give the test to a small group at a table, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Questions 9 and 10 (subtracting on a number path and subtraction facts to 10) are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: leave them out and score out of 8 if your class does not learn them. Questions 7 and 8 are a few facts each: give the point when all are right, or score them by the fact if you like. Question 6 is an adding story on purpose, to see who listens for "more come" before choosing the sign. The answer keys name each question's skill, so a missed question points to the lesson to reteach.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school, or Form B as a check after the unit. Read each question aloud and let your child act out the story with small toys or fingers.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by crossing out, drawing dots, circling a sign or writing one number
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then read the story
  • On question 5, a child may draw the dots in any order: count them with the child
  • Watch for children who count the crossed out pictures too
  • Use Form B as a retake after reteaching what was missed

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.1 Show adding and taking away in many ways: fingers, objects, pictures, sounds, acting out, words, or number sentences.

  • K.OA.A.5 Add and subtract quickly and accurately with numbers up to 5.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.

Kindergarten Subtraction Within 10 Test

Kindergarten

A unit test for subtraction within 10 in Kindergarten, made to be read aloud: a one-page pre-check, a two-page review with a tip on every question, and the unit test in two forms (A and B) that ask the same questions with different pictures and numbers. Children find how many are left when some are crossed out, act out take from stories by crossing out pictures, write the number sentence for a picture, take away in a ten frame, draw dots to solve a story, circle plus or minus for a story, and answer subtraction facts to 5 and a mix of adding and subtracting to 5. The last two questions (subtracting on a number path and subtraction facts to 10) are for the states that teach them. A small picture beside each question number lets the teacher say "find the sun." Answer keys name the lesson and skill of every question.
