How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on subtraction within 10, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the moon. 7 apples are on a tree." There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, at a table with counters and a ten frame out. Read a question, let children answer on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 6 is an adding story on purpose, as on the test: talk about how "more come" tells you to add. Questions 9 and 10 (subtracting on a number path and subtraction facts to 10) are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: skip them if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud and let your child act out the story with small toys or fingers.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by crossing out, drawing dots, circling a sign or writing one number
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then read the story
  • On question 5, a child may draw the dots in any order: count them with the child
  • Watch for children who count the crossed out pictures too
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.OA.A.1 Show adding and taking away in many ways: fingers, objects, pictures, sounds, acting out, words, or number sentences.
  • K.OA.A.2 Solve story problems and add or subtract with totals up to 10, modeling them with objects or drawings.
  • K.OA.A.5 Add and subtract quickly and accurately with numbers up to 5.
  • 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract to 20, working fluently within 10, with strategies like counting on, making ten, fact families and doubles plus one.
