How to Use This Pack

One page to give before the first lesson of the unit on numbers to 10, to see what children already know. Read each of its six questions aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. How many bananas?" Children count a scattered group, trace and write two numbers, count the dots in a ten frame, draw dots in an empty ten frame, find how many there are when 1 more comes, and write the numbers just before and just after a number. It has a Score line, and the key names the lesson each question leads into. The unit review and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Give the pre-check to a small group at a table before the first lesson, reading one question at a time and waiting until everyone is done. Then sort the children by what they missed: a child who loses track in a scattered group needs counters to move as they count, and one who counts every dot in a ten frame is ready to learn that the top row is 5. A low score at the start is no surprise; it shows where to begin.

At Home

Use it to see what your child knows before the unit on numbers to 10 starts. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.

Tips for Success

  • Give it before the first lesson, not after
  • Read every question aloud; children answer by writing numbers or drawing dots
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Read the score as a starting point, not a grade
  • The key names the lesson each question leads into

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.4c Know that each next number in the count stands for a group with one more object.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
