How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on numbers to 10, to do together the day before the test. Its 10 questions are the same kinds as the test's, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Count the tomatoes." There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, at a table with counters and a ten frame out. Read a question, let children answer on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Questions 9 (one less) and 10 (counting back from 10) are taught in Kindergarten in some states only: skip them if your class does not learn them. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number, drawing dots or drawing a line
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • In a ten frame, the top row is 5: watch for children who count on from 5 and those who count every dot
  • Keep counters and a ten frame out
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.4c Know that each next number in the count stands for a group with one more object.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
  • 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, such as adding 4 by counting on four more.
