How to Use This Pack

Two pages that go over the whole unit on numbers to 5, to do together the day before the test. Its 8 questions are the same kinds as the test's, in the same order, with other numbers, so nothing on the review is on the test. Read every question aloud: a small picture beside each question number (a sun, a moon, a car) lets you say "Find the sun. Count the owls." There is no Score line: it is practice, not a grade. The pre-check and the unit test are packs of their own.

In the Classroom

Do the review together the day before the test, at a table with counters out. Read a question, let children answer on their own, and stop on any that trip up more than a few. Question 8 (a die and a five frame: seeing small amounts without counting) is taught in Kindergarten in some states only: skip it if your class does not learn it. The keys name each question's lesson, so a question the class misses points to the lesson to go back to.

At Home

Use the review as practice before a test at school. Read each question aloud and let your child point and count out loud.

Tips for Success

  • Read every question aloud; children answer by circling, writing one number or drawing a line
  • Say the picture first: "Find the moon," then the question
  • Watch for children who count one picture twice in a scattered group
  • Keep counters out
  • Go back to the lesson the key names for a question the class misses

Common Core Standards Alignment

This pack supports the following Common Core State Standards for Mathematics:

  • K.CC.A.1 Say the numbers in order up to 100, counting by 1s and also by 10s.
  • K.CC.A.3 Write the numerals 0 to 20 and use a numeral to show how many objects are in a group, with 0 meaning none.
  • K.CC.B.4a Count objects by saying numbers in order and matching exactly one number to each object, none skipped or counted twice.
  • K.CC.B.4b Know the final number in a count gives the total, and the total stays the same however the objects are arranged or counted.
  • K.CC.B.5 Tell how many: up to 20 objects in a line, array or circle, or 10 scattered. Also count out a requested number up to 20.
