Eight pages that put the five short vowels side by side, the sounds in cat, bed, pig, dog and bus. Children circle the vowel they hear in each picture, write the missing vowel into words like c_t and sh_p, and cut out pictures to sort by vowel. Then they circle the word for a picture where only the vowel changes, follow the short e words through a maze and play roll and read. Each picture is one children name one way, and the answer keys name them all.
Practice the five short vowel sounds with a hand sign or a picture for each before children start. On the circle the word page, have children read all three words aloud: cat, cot, cut. The cut and sort pages suit a small group or a center.
Say a word slowly and ask which vowel is in the middle. Swap the vowel and read the new word together: pin, pan, pen.
Short vowel worksheets that mix a, e, i, o and u, so children listen for the sound in the middle of each word. They circle the vowel they hear, write the missing vowel, sort pictures by vowel, pick the right word and follow one vowel through a maze.
