Eight pages of three-letter words grouped by their endings, such as -at, -an, -ug, -ell and -op. Children write the first letter to finish a word, cut out word cards and sort them by family, circle the word that names a picture and match words to the pictures they rhyme with. Then they write their own words in word family houses, make word sliders that turn one ending into many words, and play roll and read with a family in each column.
Start with one family on the board: write -at and ask for words that end that way, changing only the first letter. The word sliders make a good center once they are cut out, and the houses work well with a partner, taking turns to say a word before writing it.
Pick a family and take turns saying words in it: cat, hat, bat. Silly words count when you say them, but only real words go in the house.
Word family worksheets for CVC words that end the same way, like cat, hat and mat in the -at family. Children write first letters, sort and match rhyming words, fill word family houses and make word sliders to read new words.
