Eight pages of three-letter words with a short e, the sound in bed. Children read words and match them to pictures, circle the word that names a picture, write words from a word bank a sound to a box, and cut out letters to build words. Then they color the pictures with the short e sound, find the short e words through a maze, read words and draw them, and play roll and read. Every word is spelled the way it sounds, one letter or a double letter for each sound.
Say the short e sound together first, as in bed, then tap out a word sound by sound before children write it: one tap a box. The maze and roll and read pages make good partner work, and the cut and glue page suits a small group with letter tiles on the table.
Read the words together, stretching each sound before you put them together: bed, pen, net. Then take turns: one of you says a short e word and the other spells it out loud.
