Eight pages on silent e, the e at the end of a word that says nothing but makes the vowel say its name: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite, cub becomes cube. Children add an e and write the new word, circle the word that names a picture (kite, not kit or bite) and sort pictures by their long vowel sound. Then they write the missing vowel in words like c_ke, read and match, build words from letter tiles, follow the silent e words through a maze and play roll and read with each word beside its pair.
Write cap on the board, read it, then add an e and read cape. Ask what the e did: it made the a say its name. The roll and read page puts each pair side by side, so children hear the vowel change as they read across.
Write a word like kit or cub on paper and give your child a card with an e on it. Slide the e on and off and read the word each time.
Silent e worksheets for words where a final e makes the vowel say its name, like kit and kite or cub and cube. Children add an e to make new words, sort pictures by their long vowel, write missing vowels and read words like cake, bone and slide.
